NY, NJ offices meet for food, drink, and fodder for another year's bragging, griping

The New York and New Jersey offices met recently at Forest Lodge conference center in Warren, NJ, for what has become a tradition – a shared picnic, and some friendly competition for another year of bragging rights. The outcome was open to debate …and debate continues! New Jersey claims it won the first of what was to be a one-game showdown; but then two more games were added, and New York came out on top. New Jersey won the tug of war decidedly – but a largely New Jersey-populated team took a drubbing in kickball. Even the water balloon toss was a draw; in two showdowns authoritatively refereed by Simon; Ed Madan and Joe Arcaroli of NJ won the first, and New York interns Maile Dyer and Daniel Nguyen the second.

In between, there was unlimited food and drink; a spirited "guess who I am" tournament won by Rachel Harriet; a piñata that was swiftly dispatched by Sara Stanton (NYC's receptionist); bocci, ping pong, and more. Enjoy the snaps – we hope to be back next year!

Many thanks to the picnic's organizing committee: Lynne Armstrong, Lil Berlin, Maureen Corbin, Rob Davies, Erica Demme, Heather Figlar, Danielle Grant, Irina Kosoy, Ed Madan, Diana Orrico, Mark Shanosky and Sara Stanton.

P.S. Has anyone seen Wilson?

KN BUs make an impact at key industry conferences

By Erica Demme

KN has been a presence on the podiums of a variety of important MR conferences in recent months – talking about everything from segmentation to social media. Here are some highlights:

KooymanOn June 13 in NYC, Simon Kooyman and Pat Graham spoke at the Advertising Research Foundation's Audience Measurement 6.0 conference. Their co-presentation -- "Social Media: Beyond Listening to Marketing Consequences" -- brought forth results from KN's The Faces of Social MediaSM, which provides marketers with information on the potential payoff of their social media efforts.

TheriaultIn the past several months, Ben Theriault and Florian Kahlert (KN Dimestore) Kahlertparticipated in BrightRoll's V3: Video, Validation, Value – an eight-city road show that discussed online video advertising. BrightRoll, a KND client, executes video ad campaigns on media and broadcast properties for brand advertisers – including Toyota and Dunkin' Donuts -- as well as ad agencies.

EdgeJustin Edge spoke at PBIRG's Annual General meeting in San Antonio (PBIRG stands for Pharmaceutical Business Intelligence and Research Group). His presentation, “Aligning Segmentation and Targeting with Strategy,” focused on one of KN Pharma Health Care's top capabilities – global segmentation.

Knowledge Networks' Survey Science team had a significant presence at this year's 66th Annual AAPOR Conference – with nine authored or co-authored papers. Visit this link to read about our continuing ground-breaking methodological work. Topics included:

  • Panel Conditioning Effects (work from our 2007-2008 Election Study with the Associated Press)
  • Exploring Health-related Experiences and Access to Care (Differences between Online and Telephone Survey Administration)
  • Choice of Content Presentation Mode in Web-based Survey Administration (respondents were offered the choice of reviewing content in one of three modes—video/audio, audio-only, or on-screen text--then asked to review the content in one or both of the remaining alternative modes)

Survey Science will offer a Webinar to clients/prospects in September -- a reprise of selected AAPOR papers.

O'NeillNeal Heffernan and Erica O'Neill presented findings from KN's New Product Profiler database at the OTC National conference in May in Atlantic City. Looking at 80 OTC products, the presentation found that in-store merchandising was the most dramatic differentiator between products that grew and those that didn't in their second year post-launch. Contact Erica Demme for hard copy magazines with an article based on their presentation.

HeffernanNeal also presented at the Association of Coupon Professionals' Industry Coupon Conference, April 12-14 in Atlanta. Data from KN's National Shopper Lab of loyalty card shoppers revealed that while digital print-at-home coupons are more powerful than printed free-standing insert (FSI) coupons at getting consumers to try a product for the first time; digital coupons yield an 18% lower ROI than print. The report was offered as a download to clients and prospects in a follow-up email.

TiceDave Tice moderated a panel hosted by Digital Hollywood in Los Angeles back in May. The discussion focused on innovations and issues with location-based marketing over smartphones and tablets. It included representatives from JiWire, GoldSpot Media Globys and Azuki Systems and Angry Villagers.

Ugam Product Management at KN

Ugam Solutions in India continues to provide KN with a wide variety of support, including Scripting, Data Processing, Coding, Graphic Services, Panel Relations, Statistics, and AAC. One of the newest areas is Project Management support for KN survey projects. The Business Insights practice has been using Ugam for Project Management support for RA-level tasks on survey projects since April, 2010. Currently, we have a team of 7 Project Managers who have touched almost 150 projects, and regularly work on 15 to 20 projects in any given week. The team members, managed in Mumbai by Ajay Vasudevan, include Shamim Siddiqui and Urvashi Tuli (April 2010), Prachi Jain (August 2010), Bhavik Shah and Robin Rajan (December 2010), and Tarun Bandi and Ashutosh Nadkarni (June 2011). Tarun and Ashutosh significantly expand the team’s experience base: Tarun has 5 years of experience as a Project Manager and Ashutosh has 8 years of data processing experience including strong skills in SPSS and Quantum. Survey Science also brought on two Project Managers in the Spring of 2011: Omkar Redkar and Bharat Shetty.

While KN is still in the process of expanding the capabilities of the Project Managers at Ugam, the team has come a long way in the past year! Each team member is able to provide support in all aspects of project management – including SurveyMan setup, survey QC, 24-hour data checks, Edit Masters, table checking, and report QC. The team members are thrilled to be associated with KN, and are eager to continue increasing the value they add to our projects!

"What Is It?" Answers Revealed – Rachel, Ivanna, and Bob DeFelice

First Thursday update

Rachel Harriet and Ivanna Velasquez (Panel Management) teamed up to produce an elaborate and engaging First Thursday in New Jersey, with the theme "What Is It?" First, participants reached into a number of bags and had to guess what they were feeling – and it wasn't always pleasant! (Jessica Germaine of PCN won this part.) Then, the crowd had to guess the identities of dozens of classic TV theme songs – from "The Partridge Family" to "Law & Order." The NJ victor was pop culture maven Bob DeFelice (Media); and, when the contest came to the New York office soon after, Audrey Rosen and Erica O'Neill (both of BI – CPG/Retail) took home the prize. This month's First Thursday theme in Roseland: A peanut butter fest staged by Kelly Farrelly and Albina Itskhoki (both of Media).

New Public Affairs team puts down roots in D.C. office space

KN has grown a new team and a new office all at once. To serve the public affairs community, Survey Science was pleased to sign Chris Moessner, who has more than 20 years of experience using opinion research data for government and corporate communications programs. Chris and the team he is building will deliver research solutions for public relations firms, not-for-profit organizations, and trade associations.

And, to give a focus to KN's D.C. presence – which already included S-2's Joe Garrett, Mike Lawrence, and Wendy Mansfield – Moessner and company have set up shop in new office space at Duke Street in Alexandria, VA. The four-story building, located near the King Street Metro stop, provides shared meeting space and other facilities.

Training at KN: An Investment in Growth

By Lynne Armstrong

Training is a key priority at KN for the development of our valued colleagues, from entry- to senior-level staff. Training topics start with onboarding to give new associates the ability to navigate our systems – including (but not limited to) time reporting, SalesForce.com, SurveyMan, Workflow, and analytic techniques. Most of our training programs are developed and delivered internally by our own colleagues, whose investment of their time is significant. This commitment to helping others grow is just one sign of the collegial culture at KN, where employees realize that this growth strengthens the overall company and the quality of what we deliver to our clients.

Check out KN Training Central on the home page of the intranet (in the lower right, under Common Links) for a calendar of scheduled training events, and an impressive library of over 150 recordings and PPT decks. Topics covered include:

  • "New Trends in Media Use" – with The ARF's Horst Stipp, the former head of research at NBC Universal
  • presentation skills from Meredith Paige, including some illustrative and entertaining clips
  • a variety of KN processes from folks including Thomas Subias, Charles DiSogra, Elissa Chan
  • analytic techniques explained by AAC – including Ellen Veccia and Katya Seryakova – and others
  • overviews of key products, such as Quale and QuantM
  • tips on building sales and client relationships from Ben Theriault and Audrey Rosen
  • writing effective Executive Summaries, with Wendy Wallner

In 2010, over 640 KN colleagues participated in at least one of 26 training sessions – and training pace continues to be busy in 2011!

These numbers obviously translate into the sizable commitment of time and investment that KN has made and continues to make in training. We are very proud of the company's track record in developing and retaining staff, which is extremely important in the value that we bring to clients.

Custom Media, KN Dimestore bring clients, insights together for successful NYC event

The annual New York event for Media clients took on a new perspective – and significance – when the custom Media team and KN Dimestore joined forces. The panel of five included KN alum Daniel Slotwiner (now leader of custom metrics at Facebook) and representatives of ESPN, MTV, Horizon Media, and Laredo Group. At a beautiful new space in midtown's Eventi, over 80 Media and Dimestore clients mingled over breakfast and heard about the latest findings and offerings from KN – followed by enlightening discussion from the panelists on everything from digital measurement to privacy. KN broke new ground by addressing both the digital and non-digital sensibilities and concerns, and the reviews from clients have been strong indeed.

Giving Back

Kelly Pinola (Project Management) will be participating in the NYC edition of the Race for the Cure on September 18th. Last year's Race brought in over $5.4 million, allowing Komen to fund a record-breaking $4.8 million in grants for community breast health programs, as well as local and national research programs to find the cure. Like Allison, Kelly created a team this year to honor someone very special to her; if you'd like to walk or run with her on the 18th, let her know by the end of the month – she is making T-shirts for her team. Go here to sign up; just click "Join Team" at the top of the team list.

Green Update

New York Office Electric Bill Down 37%... Still Headed in the Right Direction

Twenty-two months into the 3-year Office Energy Reduction Project, we've reduced electricity usage by about 37%. The Project has focused on low cost / no cost energy efficiency improvements, including:

  • We fine-tuned the air conditioner thermostats to reflect more closely the Occupied and Unoccupied periods. Also, the new models which were installed have a "smart" algorithm built in which starts the AC at the best time each day to reach the temperature set point at just the right time required by the schedule.
  • We replaced about 15 incandescent track-mounted lights with some recently available fluorescent units that use about a third as much energy but produce the same amount of light...and they last over twice as long. Reducing light loads in summer saves not only the electricity for the lights, but in offices it reduces the air conditioning load as well.

Over the next 6 months, the Project will be focusing on three areas:

  1. We will continue to try to re-lamp with LEDs where practical. LED technology for office lighting applications did not develop as fast as we had hoped over the last year, but in fact there have been some promising developments for certain applications, notably in task lighting.
  2. We want to add one or two remote sensors to the AC wall mounted thermostats. This would help the thermostats know something about the space in general, as opposed to the temperature just by the wall where they are located. Strategically placed, remote sensors can maintain or improve comfort while reducing energy.
  3. Based on the Project's efforts, learnings and results so far, we will be drafting an "Energy Reduction Bright Ideas" booklet to be shared around KN.

The Project so far appears to be on track to end up reducing office electricity usage by even 50%, more or less.
